| | | The Karukareb Experience | CLICK ON ANY IMAGE ON THIS PAGE FOR AN ENLARGED VIEW | Karukareb is situated in a secluded kloof (valley), surrounded by the Krakadouw mountains which form part of the Cederberg mountain range and wilderness area. A perennial river runs through the reserve, providing crystal clear drinking water and shaded riverbanks. In this pristine environment indigenous birdlife and game species are allowed to thrive. Besides birds and small game, a sighting of Cape Otters is a rare privilege. Every morning fresh droppings and the remains of crabs can be found on the river bank - testament of the previous night's feast! Evidence and occasional sightings of rock rabbits (dassies), duikers, skunk, porcupines, black eagles and large troops of baboons are more common. The elusive Cape Leopard is seldom seen, but tracks and the occassional nocturnal noises are heard by the lucky few. Trees where this elegant predator sharpens its claws can also be seen. |

A number of outdoor activities are available to explore and enjoy Karukareb's natural assets. A HIKING TRAIL along the valley floor offer easy and less strenuous opportunities to explore, determined by your own range and pace. More challenging and longer hikes are available in the Cederberg mountains nearby and ranges from a few hours to overnight hikes. GUIDED HORSE TRAILS, lead by experienced guides, offer a unique opportunity to experience the wilderness on horseback. No experience is needed, since the horses are well-trained and due to the rocky terrain a slow walking pace is mostly adhered to. We only ride as fast as the least experienced rider feels comfortable with. MOUNTAIN BIKING is another fun way to experience the pristine outdoor environment. A mountain bike for your exclusive use is included in your Dinner, Bed and Breakfast package. NATURE SAFARIS into the Cederberg
wilderness can be booked with a local guide. Visit nearby San Rock Art, Floral Tours and Explore the Cederberg Mountain Range and Evening excursions to local cuisine.
WILD FLOWERS cover the open spaces in springtime as far as the eye can see in a good year from end July to October, depending on the rainfall. The whole West Coast and Namaqualand is famous for this amazing phenomenon and it is well-worth seeing.
Whichever way you choose to experience Karukareb, your soul will be replenished by the wide open spaces, the inspiring mountain scenery, the diversity of plant and animal life and the tranquility of nature around you. You have not seen stars, until you experience the night sky in the Cederberg!
